After publishing numerous blogs presenting evidence for God’s existence, it is fair to pause and consider the opposing view. Many intelligent and thoughtful people, past and present, do not believe in God. They can provide a compelling case.
The God I believe in has given each of us free will — the freedom to make our own choices. Those who reject belief are exercising that same gift. What puzzles me, however, is why some non-believers go further, ridiculing faith itself. It is one thing to disbelieve and present an alternative view; it is another to mock those who hold to faith.
“Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in Heaven” (Matthew 10: 32-33).
If God does exist — and I believe He does — then I can only wonder what such ridicule will look like if and when those individuals stand before God.
COMMON REASONS FOR NON-BELIEF
Atheists and agnostics give many reasons for their position. Some of the more common include:
- A lack of what they see as real or verifiable evidence for God.
- The belief that the concept of God is unnecessary or meaningless.
- The claim that arguments for God are inconclusive or unconvincing.
- The existence of evil and suffering, which they say a good God would not allow.
- The idea that cultural differences shape belief, not truth.
- Confidence that science will eventually explain everything without reference to God.
- The appeal to evolution and cosmology as full explanations for creation.
- The view that design in nature is a product of natural processes.
- The question, “What benefit does the universe give to God?”
- Conflicts between the age of the earth and literal biblical timelines.
- The sheer size of the universe making the powerfulness of God seem inadequate
- The fact that there is no communication from God
- Fear of what God would mean to them.
- Their perceived absurdity of the omniscience of God and the fact He would sacrifice His own son.
- The actions of those who purport to be believers and followers of God
- and more.
These are valid questions, and each deserves respect.
A MATTER FOR EVERY HEART
I do not intend here to counter each argument. Rather, I present them for honest reflection. History has seen learned minds on both sides of the debate. Many of these thinkers are now gone — but we cannot know what passed through their minds in their final moments. Perhaps some who denied God all their lives whispered, “If You are there, forgive me.”
There are also cultures where atheism dominates for historical or political reasons. Yet a loving God does not disown those who have not had the chance to know Him.
For me, I find it incomprehensible to accept that the universe simply appeared from nothing, that intelligent life emerged by coincidence, and that our existence ends completely at death. If there are no Creator and no afterlife, what is the purpose of our being at all, and why do we inhabit only this one, tiny planet?
Why have the most intelligent minds of those who have gone before us not been able to conquer death?
I have observed a very well-known commentator on You Tube transform himself from atheist to agnostic to a possible believer over the past couple of years, simply from debating other experts and delving more deeply into scriptures and other aspects of the existence of God. Many others have come to the same conclusion.
THE PERSONAL VERDICT
There will always be debate — and that is healthy. But for me, the evidence of creation, the life of Jesus, and the power of faith all point in one direction: God does exist, and He calls us to seek Him.
