25. Key considerations in the case for the existence of God

There are several considerations in the case for the existence of God that, for me, stand out as especially persuasive. Taken together, they form a cumulative picture that points strongly toward a purposeful Creator rather than chance or accident.

THE FINE-TUNING AND ORDER OF THE UNIVERSE
The universe operates according to precise constants and laws. Even slight variations in these constants would result in a universe that could not sustain matter, let alone life. The extraordinary balance required for the universe to exist suggests intention rather than randomness.

As science advances, we continue to discover just how precise and mathematically ordered the universe truly is. At times it feels as though creation itself has been waiting for us to uncover the depth of its design.

The contrary views of physicists that the fine tuning and control of the universe can be explained by necessity, some form of evolution, a multiverse scenario, or simply no explanation does not cut it for me. All design infers an element of inherent ‘software’ and software implies the presence of an intelligent designer. The universe had a beginning, and this implies a creator.

THE COMPLEXITY AND INFORMATION WITHIN DNA
Within every living cell exists a vast amount of coded information — billions of characters arranged in exact sequences. DNA functions like a language, governed by specific chemical pairings that must occur in precisely the right order.

Information of this kind does not arise spontaneously. It strongly suggests intelligence. While evolutionary processes may explain variation within life, they do not adequately explain the origin of such complex, information-rich systems. Evolution appears to work on what already exists, not create information from nothing.

The coding of anything requires a ‘writer’, in this case the creator of life itself.

THE LIFE AND PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST
Jesus of Nazareth was a real historical figure. His life, teaching, actions, death, and claimed resurrection all point beyond Himself to the reality of God. Through Jesus, the nature and character of God become personal, rational, relational, and accessible.

Without Jesus, it is difficult to understand how humanity could meaningfully relate to a transcendent God. In Christ, God steps into human history. Jesus’ time on Earth reveals all that we need to know and understand about the reality of God and His love for and desire to form an everlasting relationship with us – and He accomplished all of this in just 3 years.

Jesus claimed He was the Son of God. If this was true, then logically God exists.

THE TESTIMONY OF THE APOSTLES
The apostles were real people who lived, taught, travelled, and suffered in history. Their unshakable conviction that Jesus had risen from the dead and later ascended bodily into the skies before them, transformed them from fearful followers into bold witnesses.

They gained no wealth or power from this belief. Many died for it. Their willingness to suffer and die for what they claimed to have witnessed cannot be dismissed lightly.

The legacy they leave provides us with a clear testimony of the resurrection of Jesus and the truth of His teachings.

The apostles could have started Christianity irrespective of the resurrection of Jesus, but their conviction that He had risen from the dead and appeared to them and kept the promises He had made in the gospel stories left them in no doubt about the authenticity of the events.

Saint Paul, who was a persecutor of Christians but converted through an encounter with the risen Jesus, became the greatest advocate of his times for the existence of God and must be regarded as a truly reliable witness, especially given the punishments he endured along the way.

A RESPECTFUL APPROACH TO DIFFERING VIEWS
There will always be opposing opinions on matters of faith. My intention has never been to attack or belittle those who disagree with the propositions I have outlined in my writings. Rather, my aim has been to outline the reasons that persuade me to believe in the existence of God — for the benefit of those who may be seeking clarity, reassurance, or confirmation of their own thinking.

Belief in God is not a single argument to be won or lost; it is a convergence of evidence, reason, and reflection.
